Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
There used to be a 1969 TOTP clip of a skinheaded Slade doing Martha My Dear on YouTube.
Anyone still got the link?
Slade were still pretty big with the few remaining skinheads round my way early 70s but the Equals I'd say were the biggest British Band they followed.

Take me bak ome ........quality stuff, if you listen to a lot of the early stuff you appreciate how complex some of the tunes were ......changing from hard rock to melodies and back to hard rock in one song...

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
Kev, that's the clip I was talking about a bit earlier in the thread where they've all been assigned a dancer each.
Noddy's dance partner had a matching flat cap and rumour has it that after the filming he said to her
"hey yow, do you wanna coom backstage and I'll show yous me helmet as well!"

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
Noddy holder is reforming Slade and goes about getting some of the old glam gear back, obviously now having a bit of money he goes into Harrods to see what they have to offer. Whilst browsing, he is confronted by a sales assistant who asks "Can I help Sir ??". Noddy goes about explaining what he is looking for………….The assistant asks " Would Sir like a kipper tie ??" ……………………Noddy replies "Oh thank you very much two sugars please !!"
I'll get me coat ……………...

I appreciate where you're coming from on this. Musically, Slade certainly had more in common with the Hippies in terms of songs they covered, (Wild Winds Are Blowing, Born to be Wild, etc) and indeed, as Ambrose Slade they were pretty much Brummie hippies. On a personal note, I often do listen to their material from the late 60s and the 'Play it Loud' album from '70 and I love it, but then I also like the glam stuff that I grew up with as a kid!
For what it's worth, I feel that Slade still managed to create their own, unique and gritty sound, which combined with their skinhead image, made them a very accessible group to working class kids. I think it's a myth that ALL skinheads were into reggae and soul - certainly alot of original skins I've talked to were primarily into the fashion first and musically listened to a wide range of music styles including chart pop stuff. As an original Northern skin once said to me - he loved the image in '68 but couldn't relate to the then skinhead music - reggae - he wasn't much of a dancer and he couldn't understand what was being talked about in the songs. When Slade emerged as skins he suddenly saw a band that looked like him and his mates and who had emerged from a similar background.
I suppose the question ultimately, is what defines a group's iconic status? Is it purely based on their total authenticity to their lifestyle or is it a broader issue based on the effect they have had on a lifestyle? For example, the Who were a bandwagon jumping group (albeit, a convincing and talented one) and they went onto become the most iconic Mod group of all time - but look how quickly they dropped the mod image and soul covers as soon as chart sucess kicked in (and, incidently, they went onto produce a hell of a lot of 'prog'-style rock - Live at Leeds, Tommy and Quadrophenia for example - yet alot of Mods own and listen to the latter avidly!). That aside, I feel that the Who deserve their 'Mod icon' status as a lot of people undoubtedly found Mod through them and I suspect that a alot found skinhead through Slade and other 'iconic' things like the Richard Allen books (which were written by a 50 something!).
