Slade - Skinhead icons?
Here's a new one to discuss;
There's always alot of talk about the Who being a contrived Mod band.
What do people think about a definately contrived Skin band - Slade? Now I know this forum area is for the 1960s but the Skinhead Slade era was '69 - so I reckon this gets in by the 'skin' of it's teeth!
Personally I love their stuff, from their days as the In Betweens, Ambrose Slade and right up 'till 73 in their glam phase.
Whilst it is well documented that the skin look was forced on them by Chas Chandler, that the lads had no interest in playing reggae and most of the older skin audience saw straight through em, the fact remains that Noddy and the boys were the first Skinhead group even if by default.
From what I've read and through talking to ex-skins, suedeheads, the group seemed to either be dismissed outright or, as often the case with most I talk to, they gained a loyal following among skins that followed them into glam.
In some respects, Slade in this era remind me of some of the bandwagon jumping groups of the mod revival that were punks/new wave one minute then changed to Mods in a bid for chart success.
So I'll throw this open for replies...

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
Yep, on the whole they did look pretty good, especially Noddy.
Whenever I look at old band photos during this phase I always think that Dave Hill never really looked convincing as a 'skinhead'- definately the odd one out and not exactly looking like a 'terrace terror' - mind you, could probably have given a nasty nibble with those front teeth!

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
There was a DVD of theirs released last year and it shows what a really good band they were in terms of songwriting and performing.
A lot of bands need a bit of a 'leg up' to make it and they wisely chose the skinhead look as a vehicle of choice.
Once they'd made it big they got plenty of 'leg over!'

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
Are you talking about the DVD 'The very best of Slade?' If so, have you seen the 3 Suedehead/Smoothie style lasses in the audience during the 'Set of Six - Live' part? They're loving every minute even though the band had dropped the skin image!
Really wish someone would do the decent thing and release the really early (black and white)footage of the band as skins that is available - have seen clips but never the full thing. I'm told it's 3-4 tracks in total, one being 'Wild winds are blowin'.

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
I'll have to have another look at that clip.
I like the bit where the band each have a 'designated' dancer next to them as they perform onstage.
I bet they took them backstage afterwards for a cuppa tea and a biscuit!

Re: Slade - Skinhead icons?
Reckon Holder had a great rock voice "Get down and get with it"
Dave Hill apart from having a dodgy load of railings had a nasty little wig as well.
