When the first one was taken, there were about 10 of us as skins in Hoxton and it seemed like less than a 100 or so of us in London...knew the Becontree from Essex - bumped into them down Petticoat Lane one sunday when we were rowing with the Teds, the Archway Skins from the Hope and Anchor and a few from West and North West London such Terry Madden etc...we were into the clothes in a big way and everyone hunted down the gear in every army surplus and little tailors we could find.. got the sta-prest for a couple of quid at the Angel (I got loads out of there including ice blue levis and tonic sta-prest, they thought they were having me over at £2 a pair!!)..the ben I got from an old tailors in Well Street E8 for 50p each...bought a tenners worth all in the 'wooden' boxes including window pane checks and the old stripe bens... the Pitfield was up the road from the Lion Club (who we played football for and a couple of us boxed for..) but it had a regular disco and we'd taken it over firstly with punk but then with tamla, stax, reggae and ska (and bottles of martini and cider in the toilets!)

FCK sake ....bennies for 50p and Sta Prest for 2 quid .......thems were the days, youd be lucky to find anything like that these days ......Ebay occasionally but everyone is so tuned in they know the prices and what people will pay ......

I used to hang around with a mate in the 90s who boxed for Hoxton, a big leyton orient fan ......good little club, trained there once, more as a keep fit as I worked in Curtain Road/Great Eastern Street in a leather factory over that way ....I dont think they were too keen to have you train though when they found out I didnt want to box for them ....good job for them really I had sponsorship on the soles of me boots I spent so much time on me arse on the canvas emoticon

Kev

I was using the equivalent of todays prices etc... the shops couldnt wait to get rid of them, old stock taking up room, the jeans shop in Upper Street had hundreds of buttons downs (jaytex, bens, stradbrookes, brutus, jon wood etc) and would also do deals if you took quite a few.... know what you mean now on ebay, Callum still gets some good ones but some of the vintage shirts are going for £60-90 each....

As for Boxing, trained at both the Lion Club and St.Monicas, but didnt fight (got into karate and aikido instead), but a few of my mates did

I've got a couple from the summer of 78 on a lads holiday to Benidorm (about 15 of my mates/cousins went, we'd spent most of the summer holiday digging out a swimming pool in someones back garden in Chart Street, Hoxton, to get the money)...I'm in sta-prest, bens, loafers etc with a suedehead cut and they'll all in fiorucci jeans and perms - all bloody soulies... I stuck out like a sore thumb!! Got back just in time to make it to see Sham at the Reading Festival.....
