Re: Mod bands who reform - without all of their originals members?
Surely it doesn't matter whether Feargal wrote the songs or not, because if he's not singing you might just as well be listenng to a tribute band. However good they are, it would still just sound like someone covering an Undertones song.

What about Secret Affair? Should they have had the Shelton line-up or was it okay playing with Paul Bultitude. That was probably okay, but I was slightly uneasy about the thought of The Chords without Martin Mason.
The Boss are a top band - you can't be listening properly. There cover of The Small Faces "All or Nothing" is just stunning. The Chords with Tony Barber on bass were just as good with Martin Mason.

Re: Mod bands who reform - without all of their originals members?
When I saw The Boss in 1986 they were covering the Sex Pistols, not the Small Faces. They didn't look like mods then - and they sounded like a pretty average pub band. They looked more like casuals too.

They look and sound great now, saw them last year and was very impressed. Maybe by 86 there were needing a change of direction.

Re: Mod bands who reform - without all of their originals members?
I think The Boss are more a band with some mods in rather than a mod band - they play 'Power Pop', apparantly.
Live they play New Wave stuff and plenty of mod stuff, but most of all I like their original material. When their new album comes out I'd highly recomend it as I've heard sneaky previews and they're as good as anything else out there and better than most.

Woah, woah woah.
Have we got a different Boss or what? Get along to a gig. They are so'kick-ass' it's scary. A load of us are off up to Liverpool to see them play at the Cavern for the third time this weekend. Their album will be out in January full of self-penned compositions which are superb.
As for their covers, at the recent Small Faces convention, their rendition of all or nothing was so good one of Steve Marriot's family was left in tears.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion but when you call people I respect chancers I get a tad upset.

Did anybody defending The Boss here ever see them the first time round?

Re: Mod bands who reform - without all of their originals members?
I saw The Boss play their third gig at the Elm Park Tavern 1984 where they played original material plus Who & Jam covers to a pub full of casuals a very hostile situation, but it did not deture them playing what they wanted to play. Since then I have followed them like a sad groupie over the length & breadth of the country, twice to Paris plus a three week tour of Italy.I am dragging my wife up to Liverpool this weekend to once again lend them my support.
Yes they used to cover the pistols & still cover the Clash & do so very well. Small World covered Del Shannon & Hole, LTS cover The Clash & Hendricks. As long as you make that cover your own & do it well it sould not make a difference.
Were The Who a mod band? Or were they a band that had a Mod following?
It souldn't matter what a band wears, it should be about how good they are musically. I may sound biased but The Boss of 1984 & The Boss 2003 are non comparable & so they souldn't be. One thing I can say for sure is that they always give 100% whether they play in front of 5 people or 2000.
I would give them another go Mr Ceaser you may be surprised.

Could not have put that any better.
