New "60s" theme restaurant/bar

Opening this Thursday night at The Festival Leisure Park, Basildon. Mark and several others are going over to promote the opening on their scooters. Being filmed by a crew for a website too. The restaurant/bar is called Back To The Sixties and apparently half the place is decked out to resemble Carnaby Street and the other half The Cavern Club. Sounds interesting. At the opening there is to be a Beatles type band playing on the rooftop garden, I do hope it don't rain. Guess whose working Thursday night through to Friday????? emoticon Hx

Hi Kitty emoticon Yeah, it SOUNDS good. I'm always a bit cynical about Theme bars etc
I'm afraid. Scared the powers that be think its cool to play Jive Bunny and the like and have the staff dress in daft 'fancy dress' type clothing, that's just me. Heyho you never know, maybe, just maybe, this time someone may have got it right? I'll wait and see what Mark, our daughter and some of the others report back. I'll keep you posted. Hx

Re: New "60s" theme restaurant/bar

Well, first reports were favorable. When the guys arrived on the scooters there were a couple of blokes with videos filming them, and they got them to ride around the parking area 'parading'. They all took off their lids which for Mark, at least, is far more natural. There was someone else photographing and when Mark took off his parka and it was apparent that he was 'suited and booted' they got him to pose for photos on his scoot.. Entry to the bar was by invitation only and the guy who manages/helped create the idea, shook hands with each of the guys and thanked them, free cocktails were offered and Mark said there were freebie nibbles handed round during the evening. The band that actually played (inside) was the Searchers-two of the original members- and two others. Mark said they sounded really good.
The sounds from the DJ were authentic 60s sounds.. a non stop play of Beatles, other mersey sounds, Kinks, Stones, Hollies. There is a mock-up of the Beatles Abbey Road album cover, including a zebra crossing and the back half of a white beetle complete with the same number plate (don't know if this was the original).
There's an upstairs bar and as you walk in there are shop fronts mock-ups, representing Carnaby St. There's The Shakespeare's Head , Lord John and a front with newspapers and mags from the time, in the window.
A Dalek and a set of drums with The Kinks written on the front, share a space too. The Cavern is a painted area, but very well done he said.
There is also an area dedicated to the Rat Pack with a mini-version of The Sands Casino in Las Vegas, which was much visited by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis etc.

Martin Peters-ex West Ham and Tottenham Hot Spurs player and part of the England winning World Cup team of 1966 attended/opened the venue. The manager/creator is quoted as saying he wanted somewhere that would take people "....back to the most colourful time Britain has ever had...."

There's also posters around the walls from some of the decade's well known films like Alfie, Goldfinger, The Birds and The Italian Job, plus portraits of people such as Marityn Monroe, J F Kennedy and Muhhammed Ali. hx

Evening emoticon
yep, I must say it does sound ok as theme places go. Mark said the attention to detail/authenticity was good. The folks we know locally and ourselves plan to spend an evening there in the near future. Just need to bear in mind that it's not a 'mod' venue as such. Hx
