I'd be interested to know where you guys draw the lines between each type of music?

There is surely loads of overlapping?

There is, although Doo-wop is obviously a distinguishable genre in itself. As for R&R, there's a clear distinction between some white and black versions. Nobody can pinpoint the first R&R record, but that's probably true of most genres since they all emerge from various roots. I guess R&R in general is played in a faster time than R&B, and early black versions upped the tempo of swing or 'jump' jive. Rockabilly tends to be even faster, and is a 'white' genre. I mostly listen to and play out R&B, which tends to involve a horn section and accents the beat that was not a major part of early blues. But some people might call a piece of music either R&B or R&R and not necessarily be wrong. Clear as mud, innit? emoticon

I think that's what I'm getting at really. Would it be true to say, that depending on whether you were a mod or, dare I say, a rocker, you would call some tunes R&B, or Rock 'n' Roll?

I mean, Chubby Checker has to be an example of this doesn't he?

Good point. The same uptempo tune might crop up at both Rock'n'Roll and Mod nights. Those of us who attend the club called 'Lady Luck' might look out of place to some people, but the mods and 50s stylists are both enjoying the same sounds. Much of it is, after all, music which early mods would have been into.

Re: 50s Rock n Roll/R&B/Rockabilly

the R&B or RnR debate is one that never ends....my simplified take on it is that R&B involves a horn section and whereas RnR might have a single horn player but overall is more guitar driven....rockabilly being a completely different sound with a heavy country/western swing influence mixed with blues, never having a horn section (and for real purists, only a rhythm guitar + electric guitar + standup bass ...no drums)

if yer not familiar w/50s tunes, these are pretty "mod friendly" artists to check out:

Big Mama Thornton
Lavern Baker
Big Maybelle
Joe Houston
Mickey Hawks
The Cues
...as well as the ones Bop mentioned

and yea, there is tons of overlap between "genres" which is why at a 50s record hop you will hear a pretty wide range of music that isnt exclusive to just "rockabilly"
