Re: How the scene died & what evolved!

i've got the book.... i just checked it out again. it really was pretty much as you see it there.

as is usual in all fashion. as soon as the masses caught onto a style the people who had origionated it had already moved on.

gotta keep moving to be cool

that makes sense...it's what Mod is all about...however, if we had kept up this "gotta keep moving" fashion thing, we would dress almost nothing like the original mods...who knows what we would look like?!?!?! emoticon

That is a very, very good point. And it's why there have always been conflicts and contradictions between mods following the original, perceived philosophy, and those emulating them.

I admit to being a magpie, and stealing ideas off all the mods that have gone before me! Plus, being just a little bit obsessed with the 60's, I *have* to try and copy what they didemoticon

Is 'copying' a mod trait? Hmmm... this is where the contradictions start...

Bothered? Me? Nopeemoticon

Well that's where the paradox of "Modernism" comes in, exactly. The original mods were all about the future, moving fashionably at a rate most could not keep up with; their goal was to steer clear of the past. And here we are, "Modernists", contradicting all these points...yet I call myself a Mod. There really is no way of going around the paradox...perhaps incorporating a little of your own personal style to "upgrade" is a step!

...just my thoughts...

Re: How the scene died & what evolved!

as you get older the body spreads out a bit, not a lot just a little bit, i just can't imagine wearing something like i wore then. slits in the trousers are a bit too gammy for someone of my age, pointed shoes too over the top. however i feel, forgive me for being a little vain, that as a mod i developed a sense of my style that directs me even now. the way i dress may not be to everyones taste, but i will always stand out as just right even if they can't figure out what i'm up to. so i dress right for how i look and i know that in my own way i dress in a sort of up to date version of how i used to in the old days. everything has to be just right even down to matching underwear. i only wear stright leg origional 501s with the red tab and buttoned fly with an inch turnup and the seam on the inside of the trouser which shows must have the white lines running up on either side of them. i'm the only one in the world probably , who would be so anal on something like this, what can i say? some times i do invent little things to wear or affect the way i look i've tried wearing nothing that matched and made it match if you can figure that one out. when i look around at other people never mind my age, your age... i know most of them have no clue and in this world anything that gives you even the slightest edge adds to your chances of success.

all bollocks forgive my rambling

and there i was thinking i understood what you were saying! emoticon

i thought you meant that people who have an 'edge' have 'something about them' which maybe raises their social status, and influences how people perceive them in a positive way. this inevitably gains you more respect and influence, which increases your self-esteem and confidence (that you already have lot of), which then empowers you to achieve more success in everything that you do!

now you've got me rambling! emoticon emoticon

Re: How the scene died & what evolved!

we have different ambitions in life. mine was to feel secure, probably to do with my upbringing. anyway, if you feel you look good and act confidently i believe that you send out a partictular sort of vibe and you can affect someone's perception of you in a possitive manner.

maybe you would call it "having plenty of front". hey! it worked for me and the proof of the pud etc etc etc.........

but confidence can swing it for you.

and i'll tell you one thing...if we were only one thing. we were confident. because we led everything, the first yoof movement ever to open the door for you others to pour through. the adults didn't know what hit them. talk about unprepared. look at the pixs of brighton and the old bill's boats. totally mugged off!!!
