i think some areas had groups of fashionable guys that hung around in a semi gang atmosphere in the evenings and weekends. hoxton, holloway, stamford hill, the elephant, streatham, near coffe bars or amusement arcades. they got to see "gangs" from other areas at the majestic, the royal, streatham and the lyseum. although you had to be careful. a wrong look could spark off a melee. the clothing and styles grew out of trying to be more together than other "gangs" first. a lot of french influence.... new style dance. madison, twist, before the twist a wierd way of shuffle dance with your bird . first handmade long points, short points, high collar, crewnecks, short jackets nipped in at the waist jackets. mohair 2 button 1 button, narrow lapels, etc etc. as the guys started to earn more money... getting driving licenses as they grew older they worked their way to the west end and the clubs around there. man about town magazine then it became about town. margate. brighton, clacton. bracknell. no rockers anywhere. foreign birds and guys also people of a higher "class" than you may have met in your own working class neighbourhood. the birds liked a bit of "rough" which opened up more avenues for the chaps to widen their horizons. you get older, better jobs, more dough, holidaying abroad. meeting better bought up people you calmed down and realised this was just a phase to take you to the next level but for about 3 or 4 years around 1960 to 63/64 we were kings. it's amazing that for such a short period of time so much came out of it. we may, in a small part, have changed the world
nearly all the music we listened to was black music from the usa. the usual soul, blues, r & b etc. they have a good list on this site
Wow! Any stories to tell us?

Re: How the scene died & what evolved!
too much to tell and not enough memory to remember all of it. you are the first people who i have spoken to re. this for yonks and i mean decades. the more i start thinking about it the more comes back. an american friend turned me on to this site. the future is in the hands of you yoofs. i just just want to watch you have a good time so you can energize me.
here's some good ones. we wore college scarves. a small shop just off of leicester square used to sell them. angus mcgill might of been the editor of "about town" they had a spread about mods in one of it's editions. i'd love to get my hands on copies of that mag. mark feld ( bolan- t-rex) was in it. he nicked money off his mum's stall in berwick street market to pay for his gear. he was the best dressed 12 year old mod in london, handmade everything..he hung around with our mob. my brother's best friend for a while.

Yep, that's the mag. I got it from a book called 'Mods' by Richard Barnes. It's the most famous (and useful) book about mods of all time, and was written and published at the tale end of the 70's.
You can still get it too...
