Re: Top 10 Sixties Albums

Good points daddyrollingstone, have I got that right? If not I aplogise. It is, however, extremely important and significant that the roots of Modism lies with 1950's middle class Jewish - not because of their religion but "jewish" used here is a signifier - kids, it gives body to the stuff I am interested in, which is The Mods. It is also a very significant part of Mod history. I'll have to try and listen to more sixties stuff guys, but I have heard Pink Floyd "Ummagumma", saucerful of secrets, careful with that axe Eugene - I have this theory that Eugene was actually an obsessive Mod with a penchant for Small Faces memorabilia who goes ballistic when someone tears a button from his suit cuff in a fight. No Cliff Richard in this sixties plot, just fights, scooters, music and sex.

Re: Top 10 Sixties Albums

Don't know if I know ten sixties albums but I always thought Dusty Springfield was an American cowboy actor. I also know there were a lot of "concept" albums with little themes or stories running through them. Sergeant Poppers Lonely Tarts must be in any top ten, as well as Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, and Cream's Disraeli Gears. Helluva lot of talent and innovation, unlike today with its assembly line of girl bands boys bands and drippy commercial unspontaneous Pop Idol Fame Academy pop will eat itself garbage. Posing pouting wannbes and freaky jive girls and S-club 7 so what you're a rip off type crap. Come back Hearsay, you were so bad man! Stagnant, poisoned and Simon Cowell - says it all really. Thank God for Radiohead, The Darkness, All American Rejects et al.

If I had to chose between The Darkness and a Pop Idol I'd chose the latter, at least they aspire to be no more than vacuous teen-fodder but bands like The Darkness become the darlings of Radio One listeners and DJs who actually think their taste is somehow superior to the average 10 yr-olds, and it isn't. I !@#$ hate the Radio One Indie mentatlity that's bred a league of insipid MOR white rock like Coldplay etc emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Couldn't agree more with you Bop re coldplay and bands like Travis - dreadfully pretentious. The Darkness Permission To Land album is, however, a classic, no doubts and thats the consensus, excellent unpretentious thrash with a melody a rare commodity. The all important second album qwill be the acid test for them. Pup Idol is plain and simply a rip off, a money making venture no more, the commercialisation of every teenagers dream and the methods they use are questionable. They could cause lasting damage to contestants by their remarks and making a fool of individuals in front of millions after allowing them to pass two non-televised auditions beleiving they were good is sick. Pop Idol is immoral. Never listen to Radio 1 mate never have time.

I don't mean to offend, Markq, but I think the pearl buttons are !@#$, I know they have their place in the history of the buttonist scene but I've just never got on with them. I'm not a button purist as I do like the plastic ones (preferably blue with 4 holes, but 2 holes is ok also). I know a lot will think this remark rather inflammatory but we are all different and I'm sure there are buttonists out there that have their own dislikes.
As for jewish haberdashers inventing mod, well i've read that book too and what it boils down to is that some guys (who just happened to be jewish, though I fail to see why their religion should be of particular interest) made Italian suits for themselves and listened to modern jazz, thus inventing mod. so what about the italians? surely some of them must have listened to modern jazz while wearing their native cut of suit? and probably well before some east london guy (who for whatever reason matters, happens to be of the jewish faith). so I think that Italians invented mod, they must have been the first to wear italian fashions, ride italian scooters and listen to mod jazz.
ok i'm passing the conch on now. who's next?

I respect yer views on pearl buttons drs, like yer say everyone has the right to their own opinion. I agree that they have become somewhat of a cliche with the buttonist scene, and yer fondness fer plastic buttons (especially the over engineered four holers) proves yer not an elitist. It sickens me that there are people out there who will still only recgnise two hole bone buttons? These idiots are what will sound the death nell fer buttonism. I rate them as equal to the togglers, the greasy duffle coat wearing bastards that they are, they're just destroying the true buttonists from a different angle.
On a lighter note, I came across a nice packet of plastic, transluscent 3 holers today. Holes in a triangle pattern. About 3/4 inch across they are - real bobby dazzlers. It's finds like this that make yer realise what being a buttonist is all about.
On the subject of the first mods, when I have the time remind me to tell yer all about Clem Snirkle and the Heil Marys. That's real history, man.

Explain more about what yer see as so relevant that some of the progenitors were Jewish, beyond their coming from a slightly more affluent background, and access to cheap suits?
Someone tearing a button off in a fight! What happenend to the button? What kind of button was it? The only reason to rip a button off a suit is if it's a covered button! What right has anyone got to cover a button!? Are they ashamed of it!? Would they prefer a zip on their cuff? Or a !@#$ toggle? The bastards........ emoticon

Mark, I sincerely hope that you are referring solely to jackets. No-one should ever go out with a shirt that has a button on the cuff - no matter how dedicaed they are to the button scene. To do so is an insult to the humble cufflink community. Gimmi a double-cuff every time fer me dicky-dirts...

Oh God Mark, no! I would never insult the cuff-linkians. They are indeed a noble bunch, and staunch allies to the buttonists and their fight against all that is wrong with the haberdashery universe. I whole heartedly agree with you, my literary friend. Buttons do not belong on shirt cuffs, always cuff-links or short sleeves. These new fangled casual shirts and their buttoned cuffs - for crying out loud some of them have 2 buttons on them!! Talk about adding insult to injury. Also, buttons do not belong on shoes. This is something I feel the Italians should be blamed for. I mean, you have buckles, laces and good old slip-ons, what kind of lunatic would use buttons?? emoticon
