Re: Elitism and the cost of sausages.....
I used to share a gaff with a bloke who worked in R&D for the Kerry Group designing new types of sausages. Some of the ones he made (and taste tested on his housemates)were great, though they never made it to market. The closest would be the butcher sausages you can only buy in Superquinn supermarkets here. Delicious! Shame they don't have a branch in Galway.
Going off the topic though, I don't give a flying !@#$ about swirlies, any more than I do about goths, trendies or any other Non mods. What pisses me off about these fancy dress merchants is that they often go around calling themselves mods, whereas goths etc don't.

Re: Elitism and the cost of sausages.....
God we're doing it again arn't we ?
Deep down every one of us is an Elitest. We all think that what we are into is the be all & end all of what a Mod is all about.
In the 60's it was the numbers versus the tickets,in the 70's it was the Mods versus the 'Plastics',in the 80's it was the Elitests versus the Revivalists,in the 90's we argued wether 'Brit Pop' was mod or not,now we just hate each other & blame the 'Swirlies'.
Unfortunately it looks like it's just one of those things that is part of our scene that we will have to live with.
Simpa.

Re: Elitism and the cost of sausages.....
True enough, Simps, but it ain't just a mod thing. Put any group together and it'll have two arguing halves - it's human nature!
Me, I'm a revivalist swirly, so what do I know?

I think you just summed it all up nicely, John.

Re: Elitism and the cost of sausages.....
To change the comparison from sausages to politics, I once saw the great Tony Benn say about political parties "we are coalitions". That seems an accurate description of the broad modernist church which we all know and love. I favour the casual Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, Black Roll Neck Jumper look with a nice pair of jeans and a harrington, parka or denim jacket. But I respect the right for anyone to wear paisley if thats what they want. Oasis look excellent though, check out the Definitely Maybe cd and see how mod Noel looks in the early vids.

Re: Elitism and the cost of sausages.....
what about inverted elitism? In the 80's (as now) I was/am into the 60's thang in a big way - all my favourite bands were sixties mod bands and I dressed in sixties garb - most of the mods up here were Jammies - they basically all wanted to look like weller. I remember being ridiculed for wearing straight-leg levis with my desert boots rather than the drainpipes everyone else was wearing. I would go to events in my sage-green suit, chisel toed shoes and my Steve Marriot hairstyle and be made to feel uncomfortable by all the jam shoe and target t-shirt wearing mods. It did make me somewhat of an elitest for a short while, but not to the 'jazz-only and wearing 3 suits in one night' level. I tired of the elitism and went my own way. We're a bit older now me and thee, and we know it doesn't pay to get too uppity - it kills the scene. Swirlies - so what? He looks a dick, you look a dick, I look a dick - it's all relative. Elitism sucks and elitists are phoneys. How far does an elitist take it? True elitists wouldn't have computers would they? If this was the case we wouldn't have to worry about their opinions on mod forums but hey! they have computers - they don't like anyhting made after '67, oh except computers and vauxhall astras and holidays in spain - PHONEYS
