Elitism and the cost of sausages.....

I've got better things to do than rise to the petty snobberies and foppism of the increasingly gauling attitude of some people who are part of the scene. But I just cant help myself after Andy H's post. Some people may see me unqualified as I'm no longer an active part of it, but maybe from my vantage point I'm better qualified? Anyways......
Anybody who was a part of the 80's mod scene will know where I'm coming from when I say that the end result of blatant and blinkered elitism is a scene that implodes through it's own arsehole. Can anyone else see the pattern returning?
I think the great part of it this time is the divide between swirlies and the 6os mod scene. The swirlies this time are taking the place of revival mods in the 80s, but are maybe less vocal than their predecessors. From what it appears to me is the backlash by the traditionalist mods against the swirlies is the removal of any blurred lines regarded what's 'acceptable' for a 'true mod'. Now everytime these lines are clarified, people whose sense of taste falls outside the new parameters are instantly alienated. It's a gradual decline, but ultimately degrading to the scene. It wont kill it, but it will fracture it and it'll be another long process of rebuilding with people reaching out for new things, new sounds and new styles suddenly realising they've fucked up. Again.
I'm not a fan of swirlies and think they look like students visiting a fancy dress party, but if that's there boat then row away. Likewise if someones taste lies entirely in pre-67 jazz, rnb and beat then fine - just dont condescend and criticise the joy out of people who dont dig your bag.
I'm not aiming this at one particular person or organisation, but fail to see the logic in limiting your own choices or options. Me, I love everything about mod music and style, the more choices the better. Some stuff I dont like, or dont understand. I like psych but dont enjoy modern jazz. I like revival and beat as much as each other. I sometimes prefer US garage to UK freakbeat. Does this mean I'm not credible? I dont understand the mod scene?
I'm rambling now. But am I wrong?

Mark
You've made a valid point about the swirlies. (Who was the first person to use that term, by the way?!emoticon), anyway, I don't like the late 60s/Austin Powers style either - but I *really* do like the way they usually keep themselves to themselves, and don't try to alienate any other 'mod-like' peopleemoticon

I usually end up chatting to a lot of them at any NUTS' events I attend. And, they're not all swirlies: Quite a few of them adore the 60s beat/mod stuff, and, apart from the NUTS' dos, can't find anywhere else to go to be able to hear it.

Oh well eh... emoticon

Yer dead right Eneida. They're doing themselves an injustice by being that way, the problem is when there's a majority behaving the same way.
I was part of the Liverpool scene in the 80s and ashamed to say that the people picketing the Makin Time gig were some of those 'cool' folks that I would look up to at the Dolphin et al as a young mod. I soon came to realise though that they really weren't that cool, and I think the main reason a lot of them restricted themselves to pre-67 jazz, beat and r&b was because they were too stupid to understand anything else. Or could only afford to 'specialise'.
I can remember sitting in the corner of the Dolphin on Friday night, just having a solitary moment and a spliff and without realising it the place had become divided. One mind set congregated one side of the floor whilst the other were on the opposite. I knew then it was over for me. It was an uncomfortable scene. People still tried to 'cross-polenate' but the traditionalists just wouldn't budge. I even remember them arguing about what they should call themselves!!! Because mod was a dirty word to them - that's what them idiots who dig revival or freakbeat call themselves!! I kid you not. It frustrates me that people wont learn from old mistakes.
Kirby Joe - you remember any of this?? Does anyone think I'm speaking out of line?

Laughing my arse off, remembering how I arrived at this site.
Was over on Modculture as a new boy, talking about going to Shotgun and finding it a bit "who the f**k are you" set up, and all of the MC boy's jumped all over me, I abused a few back saying words to the effect that they were up their old arses... and they banned me. I was only there about two days.
Needless to say Lee jumped in and directed me here, where I must say, despite liking what they like, people are much more tolerant of everyone else..eh Bop. You love Revival as much as the next bloke don't ya. emoticon

Elitism will always be there. Everyone should remember their first time. My first time at a do was at the Mildmay tavern in Balls Pond Road, Hackney and it was 1987 I think and I felt all the people in there were elitist but some of them were nice.
There weren't any swirlies there and if they had been I'm sure they would have felt not welcome. You still see it sometiems when you go to clubs...people trying to be one better but as you get older you don't really let these things bother you...especially when it's some moron!

As a mod I tend to chose quality products, there are people who are satisfied with 3rd class tickets. NOT ME !!!

That's why I buy my organic sausages straight from the farm !

Cheers

JM
