Whenever this happens and I confront the person about it none of them ever meant it offensively, of course, which begs the question why did they bloody-well say it in the first place?

Err... perhaps because blind people can't see?

Re: CENSORSHIP

I knew this would happen. The initial post did hit a nerve, but I wasn't angry. The replies to it are what have really p1ssed me off. I didn't get angry because what I sew was ignorance. When I pointed out the ignorance and still got told that I'm wrong - even worse, in fact, then I really did take offense.
Strangely, it's Misery's post that has put the final nail in the coffin, which is something I didn't expect. One thing I really, really don't have is a chip on my shoulder and I'm certainly not overly politically correct. In fact, that's something I don't like as it takes away from the really important issues. At work I can't call a blackboard a blackboard - it's a chalk board. Now that's daft and prevents me saying stuff like I said here as it gets jumbles up together to help your arguement. That sucks.

Unfortunately, I'm left with little alrternative. I stand by my comment and if that's the way you feel about it then I'm afraid that I'm out of here. You can be left with the freedom to say what you like about disability and I'll be left free to not have to listen to it. I've made a lot of good friends here on the forum and tonight I lost quite a few. Some I thought were good friends, in fact.
I simply will not stay anywhere where it's Okay to take the piss out of blind people when it's their disability that is the gag.
To those of you who think I'm uptight about it - fuk you. Say what you want from now on... I won't be here to read it. And I mean it unless I get a whole heap of apologetic PMs. Of course, though, I will stil be here, because every time you make a blind gag in the future you will be referrnig to me and those like me.
Jaymod, the floor is yours... be as offensive as you want. As I said, I'm not gonna be here to read it other than as the butt of your lack of sensibility. Is that funny enough for you?
Goodybe to my friends, fuk off to the rest of you...

Bottom lnie - benig blind is not funny. It's not longr col to say all blacks steal cars. It's no longer cool to say all homosexuials are child abusers, so why is it cool for people to come out with anti-disabled sh1t like that about blind people? There is no rason.
In truth, I'm so used to that kind of coment that I didn't get angry reading it, but defending it as 'alright' and 'not meant to offend' makes me see red as the fact that people think they can get away with mocknig the most horific part of my life as an offense-free joke really is appaulnig...

To sum up: Make black jokes if yu want, but that makes you racist. Make sexist jokes if you want, but that makes you sexist. Even make disability jokes, but that makes you a eugenicist and a synonym for that is a Nazi. So, go ahead and make the joke, but carry the label that that joke implies with you. I'll wait for you at the gas chambers...

Mark, generalising is a terrible thing. To assume someone is a Nazi because they make an off-hand, maybe ignorant remark is wrong. Also Mark, naziism and eugenics are not synonyms for each other!! My wife has had cancer - are you telling me the research to help prevent and cure cancer that involves eugenics is akin to gassing innocent children. I am appalled by your ignorance.
I am really sorry that you feel the need to leave the forum Mark, and you can't appreciate a misguided but ultimately unmalicious remark in the way it was intended. I for one would be sad at that result.
Also, there is no need here for people to unnecessarily wind things up further, if you dont like someone ignore them eh? I would be intersted to know who posted the first reply to Jaymods post, and the nature of that reply. When situations are inflamed, discussion usually flies out of the window and people are forced to take sides. That's not very constructive.
100% right Lee. Lighten up people.

I think this is a good reminder to people that they should be careful about what they say/write. The bottom line is ....... if someone is offended then the remark is offensive. Doesn't matter really if the offence is intended or not ..... if its taken as offensive then its offensive and maybe an apology is due for the offence caused.

That's common sense, but where should people draw the line? I love beat ballads and deep soul, should I take offense to your no to giffer soul comment??
If something is meant in jest that can still be offensive granted, but surely people should be able to take it in the spirit it was meant?? Does anybody on this forum take Jays comments as a serious attack on Kitty's appearance and Mark's disability?? Anyone?? Jesus if we cant pull each other's collective legs what can we do?? It should have been left and allowed to develop on it's own without unnecessary censorship and wind ups. We used to be able to have a laugh on here, plenty of sarcasm and black humour, so what's changed recently??
While I'm here has anyone heard the one about the Irishman, the Jew and Pakistani gentleman all going for a drink in Manchester's gay area?? What a fantastic example of inter-racial, pan-religious, trans-gender relations.

Yes, of course this is all true, but, are we all to take it all so literally? What about the saying, 'It's not what you say, but how you say it'? Putting emphasis on certain words in a sentence makes the sentence mean something totally different doesn't it?

And, when things are quoted out of context, misunderstood, misconstrued and, in this case, reported wrongly, then sentences definitely don't mean the same thing as they were intended to.

In any case, I have a big issue with people that *seem* to be actually looking for non-existant [bad] hidden meanings to things.
