Re: Clubs in the 80s.London Just being reading all the posts on this thread - bought back memories.
Coming from Brighton we were not regulars on the London club scene but did come up from time to time for gigs at the Hope and Anchor, The Wellington, the Marquee and the Music Machine and there was also a club we went to a couple of times called Vespas. We also went to a few alldayers at Ilford Palais.
One of the funniest incidents I remember in London was when we were in Carnaby Street and a loudmouth in our group called Will who was always causing trouble started mouthing off to some punks and skinheads. A fight started and Will was first to leg it, eventually the rest of us legged it and we were chased by the skins and punks. We ended up legging it down Oxford Street where we were overtaken by a routemaster bus and to our suprise Will was hanging off the back screaming more abuse. All of us and the pursuing skins and punks stopped to take a double take at Will on the bus. We then sprinted after the bus jumped on board leaving our pursuers behind. Probably doesn't sound that funny when written down and you probably had to be there.
remember going to do in kingston, cant remember name,we used to come in through richmond and when you got to kingston all the skinheads would be waiting at the train station, this particular night we got to kingston no problem, skinheads waitinng at station, this one induvidual decides hes going to jump in the road and stop us.unfortunatly he got knocked over and managed to trap his leg on a scooters crash bars,my old mate keith,i do believe, anyway after about 30 yards of him shouting and screaming and beeing dragged along and everybody doing their best to free him,by way of a swift kick up the arse without falling of scoot he, was last seen rolling nicely to a stop in the gutter, yes indeed good times
There were a few regular mod clubs in Kingston. The first was called Jesters around 1980/1981 and, then the Dolphin, which ran for a few more years before they totally redesigned Kingston for John Lewis and the Bentall Centre.
Pretty much all of them and then some... I was out most every night of the week from 1980 to 1988. Sneakers Sunday, Bush Hotel Monday, Epsom Play House Tuesday, Dolphin Wednesday, night in Thursday, Sols Arms Friday, Phoenix Saturday. Other places of note: The Regency Suite, Romford; The Bush, Shepherd's Bush; The Bedford Arms, Bedford. I really need to look through my boxes of flyers! I am sure I am forgetting quite a few.
