Plymouth mod revival
I've only just joined up here, but often used to look at various posts... Anyway, i was just wondering if there is anyone who remembers being in Plymouth in 1979-1982 who used to go to that club that was above The Circus Tavern. I can remember it well, the red and black striped walls...but i can't remember for the life of me (must be really getting old!!)what the club was called. But i spent many Saturday nights there... Anyone remember?

Re: Plymouth mod revival
Hiya Jply...welcome to the board. As you can probably tell from my name I'm a Janner and remember the Circus Tavern but didn't go. I do remember going to 'Castaways' down Union Street, and used to dance to all the Mod/2 tone stuff with a few others but funny enough most of the floor would clear as I don't think the girls particularly liked it!

Re: Plymouth mod revival
'Castaways' blimy! There's a name i'd forgotten! It's kind of weird how i can remember exactly the way the place looked, but i can't remember the name of it at all, other than it was on top of the Circus Tavern, which was as rough as hell! It was a great night every Saturday, where all the Mods used to go, and the music played was great, stuff from the revival alongside 60's classics, and rare Northern stuff...There was no 'attitude' it was great, you could hear a rare soul track you'd never heard before along side a Secret Affair song...We had a great time. All the scooters parked up round the back, and every so often someone would run in and shout about skinheads attacking the scoots, and everyone would pile out...only to find, possibly 'a' skinhead admiring the scooters! Someone somewhere must remember the name of the club!!

Re: Plymouth mod revival
I remember a place that was upstairs in Union Street, just before the roundabout...bleddy ell that was rough. Went in there one night and this skinhead was punching the wall really hard and smiling at me, whilst 'necking' with his girl! Thankfully I was able to get out with any hassles...can't rememebr what that was called either. Getting bleddy old i guess.
Also I remember a place called 'Woods' I think above Burton's top of town, used to be loads of punks in there and heavy rock fans. another nice place.
Fiesta and snobs that was much safer

Re: Plymouth mod revival
Know exactly what you mean Mystery. It's a bit vague now but I think the punks used to have the spot outside 'Virgin' records to hang around. Bretonside bus station isn't far from the Barbican (Historical quayside) and next to the City centre so it was always a kind of central place to meet. The Indoor Market was more 'rockabilly' etc.
Happy days.

Re: Plymouth mod revival
yes it's all true (well, not the 'rent boy' bit...! Or at least none that i knew of...)
The bus station was a Mod meeting point, And yes punks had the wall outside the Virgin shop, and the indoor market was a bit rockabilly...It's all coming back to me now...with the exception of the name of the bleedin' club!

Re: Plymouth mod revival
Hey jply. Did you ever go to any of the gigs at the 'Poly'?
I remember seeing 'The Selecter and Swinging Cats' there. The place was throbbing and both acts were brilliant. Selecter worked their socks off that night and I remember loads of us all dressed up, button down shirts, loafers all that soaked in sweat...bootiful.
