Re: The Libertines

Well the singer is a total junkie. He left the Libertines to start another band..called the Libertines. Then, he broke into one of his bandmates houses, and was recently put on trail. I don't know if he has to serve jailtime, but he's going to be locked either in a prison or rehab for a bit.

Yeah, the libs are a great band. And like them or not, they came up with a very mod lyric which I reckon's quite pertinent:

"There are fewer more distressing sights than that of an English man in a baseball cap".

Yeh, tickled me that lyric.
I think Pete actually had his sentence reduced on appeal didn't he, as the judge was originally very hard on him, not taking into account his addictions and wanting to punish the bad music dude.
Anyone else heard about the music workshop thing?

Re: The Libertines

I went to go and see The Libertines at a private (extremely overcrowded) gig at The Duke of Clarence Pub in Islington a coupla months ago.

I'd never seen them play before and mainly went because it was a nite out with my scene mates. It was the first gig that Pete played after he got out of the slammer.

I heard stuff about this band but thought I'd reserve judgment until I had seen them. I thought they were good at what they did but wasn't totally bowled over by them.
Not really my cup of tea. They are most certainly not Teen Snarl Garage and definately not Mod. But that's just my opinion! Must admit some of us felt a bit old amongst all the screaming 16 year olds!

Can't get into the Libertines at all. Sound like The Strokes to me, like loads of bands at the moment.

The Dirtbombs, now that is a band. They might not all look like mods (though two of them do), but when they do their fuzz garage versions of old soul tunes, as well as their own frantic compositions, they are simply awesome. Mick Collins is a great singer and songwriter.

Re: The Libertines

No it's a different Mick Collins. He's a rather tall and elegant African American gentleman with plenty of distinguished cool and a great voice. He's from Detroit and been a fixture on the Detroit garage rock scene for years. The Dirtbombs are quite an unusual outfit in that they have two drummers and two bass players with Mick singing and strumming on his cheap fender squire with plenty of fuzz fuzzing. Jim Diamond is also in the band, who has produced loads of bands such as the White Stripes, Mooney Suzuki etc. Also one of the drummers is from the Hammond groovers ‘The Come Ons’ . Almost like a Detroit supergroup. What is great about them is their mix of fuzz teen dance and good old soul. Their Ultra Glide in Black album is a soul and funk covers album done in the fuzz garage attitude. A really cool record. Mick looks very smart in his suit and shades in an old style Motown pose on the cover. I'd recommend the album. They've just been on tour over here, and they maybe still here, check em out if you can. They've got a foxy mod chick as one of the bass players on this tour too.

Thanks for the info Jonny, I think I may have seen
them play at some point. Didn't they play the Las Vegas
Grind in '99? Maybe getting them mixed up from somewhere.
Where are you base Jonny anyway?
