Small Faces had it tough.
Take out the Beatles and Stones ,surley the Small Faces would have been the biggest band in the world during the 60's..i personnely don't think they get the respect they deserve for their sound and solo stuff!!!

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
For some reason they weren't prepared to slog around America which is something all the big band's of the day did.
Parallels with The Jam there too.

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
Gary,
Got to say that I agree with our friend Ste64 here.
The Small Faces never, ever, got the appreciation that they truly deserved as the BEST British band of the 1960`s.
Love The Who,and The Beatles, but Small Faces had it!

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
I dunno......they had a coupla catchy lil choons but nuffin special.
Only kidding!
They had 2 great songwriters, great songs, and arguably the greatest white soul singer of all time.
The trouble is they didn't consolidate it by (for want of a better term) cracking America.
The Kinks didn't either.
They're remembered fondly here by those of a 60's persuasion but the wider populace see only their novelty singles.
I still by SF stuff even though I've already got it in one form or another.

I suggested that on the Modsreunited forum and John Hellier jumped down my throat.
All I know is is that they came out of the 60's skint and he didn't.
Alright they probably did a lot of dough on drugs but a lot of releases of their material after that came out through companies in 'exotic' places and they never got their dues.
I'm not saying it was down to Sharon Osbourne's dad but they definitely signed bad deals back in the mid 60's.

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
good thing is they are remembered and respected for the music they made and not the money they made (or didn't)..
the money doesn't make a difference in the end.. hopefully it didn't to Marriott/Lane along the way

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
I think the comment about the biggest band in the world after the Beatles and Stones is tosh, sorry. What about the Who, Or even the Hollies etc, there are hundreds of 60s pop groups who were bigger than the Small Faces...

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
I agree Jeff. Despite the fact that I am a total SF nut, always was, always will be, that's just my personal choice. I do think The Small Faces were THE ultimate mod group in the 60s., a young mod girl's dream ( a few mod blokes dream too haha). They were mods. They walked the walk, wore the clothes, talked the talk, lived the mod life and got together to form the group and sing songs/tunes that we could relate to. Ogdens Nutgone has to be an all time top classic concept album. However, I feel there are other groups that were bigger and some have evolved and still going strong. I agree about The Hollies-totally under-rated and also The Moody Blues, loved them then and love them still. To see them perform live is a total blast, such accomplished, top musicians. World class!
