Re: Anybody remember Barons (the church elms leigh on sea)
Hi Guys..I ran the mod nights at barons
the countdown club ran on wednesdays and
saturdays and during it's run we had some
great live acts including Georgie Fame,Zoot
Money,The Downliners Sect..and legendary R'n'B
Man Tommy Tucker..the club featured mainly
original authentic 60's club sounds where as
other 'Mod'clubs were playing shite like
Helen Shapirio and Hermans Hermits!!
R'n'B - Jazz - Soul - Motown - Ska was the music of the 60's Mods, and anybody claiming to
have been a mod in the 1960's but listen to the
Beatles and the Stones was a ticket, not a face

WOW some GREAT artists you've named there Dick. Pity The Rolling Stones and The Beatles aren't on the list though.

Northstand - About Le Mat - yeah, top band -I'm from Leigh-on-sea and me and a lot of the younger Southend boys used to follow Le Mat in the early 80's.
Dunno if you saw them at the Queens Hotel in Westcliff supported by Doctor and the Medics - now that was a gig !!
Ironic that Doctor and the Medics went on to get a no.1 and Le Mat vanished - they were always viewed as the jokey support slot !
I did have their one and only album but lost it years back - would love to get a copy on CD.
Also -Barons - remember that too - thing is I was a touch too young to get in back then - remember the car-park being absolutely full of scoots though.
--- I love the smell of 2-stroke in the morning.

My mate( though not for a fair few years) was the drummer from Le Matt, I knew a few of the Southends Mods at that time.Great Days Southend had a really good scene.
