the playn jayn
i've name dropped them a few times on other threads, but i was curious on how other board members rated them?
and a question for eddie, in the hope that he's reading this, did you have a punch up with mike jones in the regal?

Re: the playn jayn
I only saw them once and at that point only Mike was singing.
I realised then what a great band I'd missed out on and my wife loves to remind me of the fact that she saw them dozens of times and interviewed them for Go Go fanzine!
Wellersmate knew Mike Jones I think.

Re: the playn jayn
Ha, I (over)-stayed at Mike and his girlfriends flat in Kennington for several months in 1982. Anyone know whatever happened to him or his brother?? I think they were from Bournemouth if that helps

Re: the playn jayn
Yes I knew Mike (Gary, as you said) - but not really from the playn Jayne days, I met him through his later band The Other Side who I used to go to see with my new founded '60s' mates, from 1990 until they were no more a couple of years later. Mike had gone through a 'funny' stage after doing Acid at some festival or other and started turning up late for gigs and then it all just dwindled, and then he more or less disappeared off the face of the earth, he lived round the corner from me in Pimlico. He gave me one of his old PJ singles - pic sleeve and everything - to me he was unrecognisable on the cover lol! I remember driving him, and a younger chap who I thought was his brother, to Norwich for one of their gigs once - it might have been a cousin of his tho - had dreadlock type hair even tho I thought he was white?!! they sang Nutgone's and Howlin' Wolf all the way there and back hahaa!
So back to the thread... no I never saw PJ but I loved his other band and I was quite sorry that they never made it - they were better than a lot of stuff about at the time. I have a tape still which I should really copy in case it ever gets mangled! Mike was a nice chap and the last I ever saw of him was roughtly about 1997 he passed by me in Tachbrook Market - completely oblivious to anything around him - shame Hope he's ok now.

Re: the playn jayn
nice to read the replies to this thread.
with regards to mike's whereabouts, the last i heard he was back in bournemouth living close to his parents.
thanks eddie for clearing up the regal story. can't remember where i heard it, or why it's stuck in my mind for so long!
i think i first came across mike in about 1980. he was playing in a band called 'the zoo' who later became the playn jayn. craig, the other singer used to work in a shop in carnaby street.
mike was probably one of the nicest guys on the scene. very knowledgeable, and as eddie says, a bit of a face. i'd always bump into him at record shops like vinyl solution in bayswater, or plastic passion in notting hill gate. he introduced me too a lot of great obscure 60's bands like the monks. i think the last time i saw him was at the creation reunion gig at the mean fiddler. he seemed out of it, a real shame if the drugs have taken their toll.
i always thought the playn jayn were a terrific band, especially live. if ever a band were in the wrong place and the wrong time, it was them. if they were about in the britpop years, i'm sure they would have found fame and fortune!
i used to work in pimlico, and visited mike quite a lot when he lived in gloucester sq. the otherside were a great band, but a little too rock for my tastes. wellersmates post about mike reciting ogdens made me laugh, because i spent quite a lot of 'stoned' hours listening to him do the same!

Re: the playn jayn
Hahaa yeah re the Ogdens recitals - it was Gloucester Street he lived in - just a few streets away from me - I hung out round his quite a bit too - remember the time his cat had kittens - they were gorgeous but he let them run amock!!! his living room was all lilac/purple and candles - do you remember that?

Mark they cancalled on the night , yes I turned up at that too when Electric Morning were to supposed to support, but they did honour the gig about 6 months later, I went with my friend Roy , no more than 50 people there and you know how big the Beer- Keiler was - very strange atmosphere
