London R&B legends The Birds release first new single since 1966!

The Birds, one of the finest bands to come out of the London rhythm and blues explosion of the 1960s, are back with a brand new single, the first since 'Say Those Magic Words' in 1966!

After a break of 45 years, founder member and frontman Ali MacKenzie has relaunched the band that kick-started guitarist Ronnie Wood’s journey to full-blown rock legend status via Rod Stewart and The Faces and The Rolling Stones.

And the new-look line-up has been quick to get in the studio and record two tracks that are now available as a limited edition 7" single on their own 'Birdsong' label.

The A-side is a re-recording of an original Birds composition 'That's All I Need You For'. Written by guitarists Ronnie Wood and Tony Monroe, the song was performed by the band in their cameo appearance in the 1967 horror movie 'The Deadly Bees'. But a whole verse was edited out, and with the original recording being lost, the film's truncated version - with dialogue from the film running over it - was the only version that survived, see here: 6xGdYxbQsI" rbtag2="rb-qdecode-href-en" rbcvt="1">http://www.youtube.com/watch?vemoticon6xGdYxbQsI

Even so, released on the 2004 Deram compilation ‘The Collector’s Guide To rare British Birds’ it quickly became a cult classic and a favourite amongst latter-day mods and fans of 60s garage and 'freakbeat' bands all over the world. And now, a faithful rendition of the entire song is available at last.

The B-side (no pun intended) is a powerful cover version of the Tim Hardin classic, 'If I Was A Carpenter'.

Despite being contemporaries of other classic 60s groups like The Who, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Small Faces and Yardbirds, commercial success escaped the original Birds, even though they were hailed at the time as ‘London’s greatest R&B group’. A record deal with one of the major labels of the time, Decca and later with Reaction saw three singles released, but none troubled the charts and the group broke up in '67.

The quality of their recorded output meant that their reputation continued to grow over the years however, and the band's worldwide fanbase is possibly as big now as it ever was in their heyday.

But the catalyst for putting a new version of the band together was the launch party for a book on another 60s group who never enjoyed the success their talent deserved, Les Fleur De Lys.

Ali explained: “The writers, Paul Anderson and Damian Jones, had interviewed me for another book they’re putting together about the 60s mod scene, and kindly invited me to the launch party for the one about Les Fleurs.

“Turns out they’ve got a mate who’s a big fan of The Birds and whose band they’d asked to play at the party. When he found out I was going along, he asked Paul and Damian to sound me out about getting up and doing a couple of Birds numbers with them. I thought, ‘Why not?’ We did ‘Leaving Here’ and ‘Say Those Magic Words’ and they went down a storm.

“The reaction was so good we thought we’d have a go at learning a few more numbers. Everything gelled and came together really quickly and easily. Before we knew it, we’d nailed pretty much all the tracks that were in our live set back in the day - all the stuff we wrote ourselves and a bunch of soul and R&B belters by the likes of The Impressions, The Temptations and The Marvellettes.

"We got ouselves into the studio to capture the energy that we'd created, and I was so pleased with the two tracks we got down, that I thought it would be wrong to keep them to ourselves! So we're putting them out as a limited edition single, and I really think that Birds fans - old and new - are gonna love 'em!"

Hi Dan,
Saw you guys at the Isle Of Wight Rally and you's where great and i'm made up that there is a new single. I really want to buy a copy on ebay but one thing is putting me off. The price. Why the hell is a 7" single £10 plus postage??...you've got to admit mate, that's a bit steep isn't it? A brand new 7" should cost no more then £5.99 at the very most. And thats with free p+p.

Wotcha mate,

Gotta be honest, we were all a bit surprised when Ali said he was going to sell the singles at a tenner a pop, but he was advised to sell them at that price by someone who sells re-pressings of classic R&B and soul tracks for the same amount, and shifts the lot. Time will tell if it was good advice or not I guess!

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan thanks for your reply.
I've no doubt the single will sell well and i hope it does but it's not a reissue of a rare track, it's a new single. I will buy one, i just just feel a bit ripped off thats all.

The 60's E.P.s on Acid Jazz sell for £5.99
