Re: OVO - Original Vinyl Only.

There in lies the secret of our movement as opposed to the northern scene, we are, as a rule, a little more tolerant towards others, in such as we would turn a blind eye to the ocaisional boot or pressing ( though maybe a whole set would be taking the p1 ss a bit ) it's what you've got in yer box and what you do with it thats important, a thousand pound plus record doesn't make it any good, it's how you construct yer set, and for that no one but a buzzing dancefloor can help you.

I used to DJ at a club down in B'mouth, called Room 101 where the DJ collective was a real mix, and that was reflected in the crowd and what was played, freakbeat ( like it or loathe it ) alongside indie, with R&B an all flavours of soul thrown in, on a mix of formats, all in the name of a good night, and they were.

A typical playlist of tunes that i've used down there are :-

Jet - Are you gonna be my girl
Iggy pop - Passengers
Republica - Ready to go
Feeder - Just a day
Sub sub - Aint no doubt
The Quik - Berts apple crumble
Mudhoney - Night of the haunted
Green hornets - Samantha
Elastica - Waking up
Rolling stones - 19th nervous breakdown

These are just some off the top of me head, there are others that escape me, but you get the idea.

And like Jeff, we've done an alternative type night of just kick ar(s)e tunes for the local types in town here, hit it with a splattering of the moddy scooty type sounds an they loved it.

Re: OVO - Original Vinyl Only.

In my mind the mod scene was fairly easy going about pressings till somewhere in the mid 90's? I have been tempted to return to putting on another club night recently but, not to sure about it since I've always used a mix of originals & repressings. The other day on the local scooter boys forum they were arguing about the exact same subject, would you believe it? Where some are actually advertising 100% original vinyl do's and so on.

I dont give a !@#$ how rare or expensive a record is, I would much rather the dj played the right records in the right order!

(tbtw Kev, Room101 is advertising a reunion do on facebook?)

I think i know one of them to whom you're referring, and in his defence he did have little or no room, so the i-pod was an easy option.

An burning in hell is a little strong innit emoticon

Maybe relegate them to childrens entertainer at a Warners holiday camp, that'll stop their farting in church emoticon

This it seems is an age old [sign in to see URL] always think there is confusion with a lot of people between what is a DJ and what is a collector DJ'ing! Most dancers just like to dance it's the other 'DJ's' or collectors amongst the audience that get shirty about the format! I like to play my original vinyl and I like to play my own quirky tunes I have come across but not everybody likes to hear them and I keep getting asked to do mixed era stuff using cd decks either as favours or for [sign in to see URL] for the latter I have no qualms!! emoticon

For some reason I nearly always use 7in vinyl, but recently I got a laptop program that enables you to use tracks from your itunes and also sample, mix etc with two virtual turntables on the screen. Haven't used it outside my house though. I think I just find the vinyl easier to look for in the dark.

Re: OVO - Original Vinyl Only.

Personally I couldn't give a flying doo-dah whether I'm listening to original issues, pressings, cds, comps or anything else for that matter, I'm listening to music first and foremost.

There's something a little nazi about this original issue only malarkey. It can only be divisive can't it?? It limits what can be played and limits who can play it. What hope has a young DJ got if that's the attitude? I know damn well I started off playing probably 75% pressings/re-issues, and that wasn't a problem. Or as Cally said, an armful of Kent albums was usually close by.

So, an admission. I've been DJ'ing now for over 20 years, and it's fair to say I've got a reasonable knowledge of music, and a reasonable collection too, as plenty of people here know. What did I play a lot of at Mods Mayday then?? Can you guess?? Re-issues...

I was sorting tunes the week previous, and came across a box that I think I'd used at a scooter do ages ago. And in amongst that box was a pile of old tunes that were popular at rallies in the 80's into the 90's. Infact that's were I probably bought most of them. That and Hi-Style... emoticon Anyways, things like Maximilian, Ray Charles - I Don't Need No Doctor, Peanut Duck, Magic Touch.... and did it empty the dancefloor? Did it bollox, stayed packed and everyone had a good time.

The whole original label thing is great amongst the collector side, and it's fair to say a lot of serious collectors DJ, but for it to be the first consideration is wrong.

I'm just in for the music maaaaaan.... emoticon emoticon

I love things, I do my best, I eat, sleep and laugh and cry just like the rest, what becomes of me is meant to be, so I'll just groove along quite naturally....

Re: OVO - Original Vinyl Only.

I only play from Original Vinyl. That's the norm up here. Scooter Rallies are different right enough. I think it's pretty !@#$ if someone who has spent a lot of time, effort and money trying to get hold of a particular track turns up and someone plays a boot of it. There's still plenty of tracks out there which dont cost the earth that you can dance to. Both old and new releases. We've got a young guy who's 18 now but has been guesting since he was 16, guess what, he only plays from original.........
