Many of them think ska is a bit too goofy and not hard enough, and since many kids who got into ska in the past couple years tend to be nerds and geeks, a lot of guys total wrote off ska. I like ska, but I must admit I myself still very much love hardcore.
I did get a room temperature pint of Ale though and to be honest I prefer it cold.
Jason, I'm sure you're a great guy, so this post isn't directed against you at all, but, to be honest, I have a bit of a problem with skinheads saying "Ska is goofy and not hard enough." I'm not sure what that actually means. Usually, when people (not you) say this (and I've heard this more than once), they really reveal their ignorance about the close link between ska, rocksteady, and the Jamaican gangster scene. These guys are anything BUT goofy and soft.
The way I feel about it is that if a skinhead comes up to me and says: "Ska is goofy. I'm hardcore," you know, that's fine for him, but I would not consider a skinhead. He might be a guy in Doc Martens and shaved heads, but a skinhead he isn't.
No need to rehash old debates, but I think there is something to be said to "getting it historically correct," especially since the boneheads have appropriated the skinhead image hook, line, and sinker.
Treat yourself, if possible, to a ska or rocksteady show with a few hundred original skins. The energy and power is amazing. Nothing soft or goofy (or hippyish or nerdy) about it at all.
...btw, I agreee: I prefer my Ale ice cold as well.
Take care
Ricardo
