What's the deal with the wave of no-Bass bands?

Last night I went and saw Spiritualized and they had the Detroit garage rock outfit, the Soledad Brothers, open for them. They weren't bad, but they consisted of a Guitar player, drummer and saxophone player. White Stripes and the like are all huge now, and too be honest some of it I like and some of it I don't, but what's the deal with not having a bass player? I think the Bass, along with the drums, is the anchor to a band. Without one it just sounds totally incomplete. Anyone have a take on this?

Hey Jason,

I saw that show when it came to Indianapolis. Spiritualized were amazing! Jason Pierce was too cool sitting in his chair with his guitar. Those strobe lights were killing my eyes, though!

Yea, I feel the same way you do about these new trendy garage bands that downsize the bass player. I just recently saw The White Stripes and it sounded like a big mess with no bass frequency. They sound good on recording, but live, it's complete shite!

No bass bands are actually quite old, it's not a new thing. Besides, bass isn't always necessary...sure it's good sometimes, but honestly, who cares about it all the time...

Daddy, do you remember that 12 incher Spacemen 3 did?
Used to get played a lot down at the legendary "Kings" Wednesday nite club in Seven Kings - instrumental
- I can't even remember what is was called..will check out the 12 incher tonite....I know B. Side was called Cheree
or summat like that. I used to absolutely adore this band
and they used to get played a lot down at "Syndrome" (Which is where "Metro" is now). emoticon

emoticon Bass guitars are unnecessary?!? I think they are essential to any group. It's the bass line that makes you dance and carries the beat of the drums.

What other bands before White Stripes, Soledad Bros., Local H, etc. have downsized their bass players?

Don't like this no-bass trend at the moment, myself. The White Stripes aren't my thing and I remember once seeing Oceansize support Kinesis (I got the tickets free)...probably the longest 20 minutes of my life, and they had no bass player.

I like the white stripes but I don't really get this trend. Aren't the bass and the drums the core of music? If so, whats the point in removing a point of the core?

Correct me if i'm wrong: The Doors were base-less, weren't they?

Ray Manzerak of the Doors played the bass on his keyboard. I believe in their later albums, they had a session bass player, but I could be wrong.

The Dandy Warhols also use the keyboard as bass setup. I don't mind this arrangement. As long as there is a bass sound somewhere in the music, it's good enough.
