Re: What Is Mod?
Keep it down, Jeff, otherwise someone from Albania's going to turn up and start asking what 'stylists' eat for breakfast and when, to the day, they started, and what trouser-width is essential, and what the hair-length should be, to the centimetre - and you'll probably bloody answer!
Off to work now, bye-bye...stylists...

But after yesterdays conversation at lunch, I did think deeply and came up with a similar conclusion to Del and Jeff.
Which was what?
Listen guys, you know me, I'll talk about everything related to the world of mod until the cows come home (and in some cases, far too deeply), but I'm a mod, nothing more nothing less, and so are you guys.
Or am I misunderstanding something? Hope I am, because it's starting to sound a little too cliquey and snobbish for my liking....

Re: What Is Mod?
No mate, there's nothing snobbish or cliquey going on, not my style by a long, long way!!
It gist of the conversation was looking at the *original* Mods, their styles and attitudes and the fact that they were *setting* the trends.
In the cold light of day, I am *following* a fashion, *following* a way of life.
Therefore, can I call myself a Mod in the true sense of the word?
That is the important phrase here....the *true* sense of the word.
The conclusion I came up with is "No, I cant!" and that scared me for a while.....
But hell....Being recognised as a Mod suits me fine!
Maybe I'm just thinking too deeply into things....what do you think mate?

Christ, is that all it is? Didn't you have these conversations when you were 18? We did. Mod is *nothing* to do with modernism, it's derived from modern jazz.
The leaders of the mod scene in the early 60's did set some of the trends. They were then taken over by the actual mods themselves, who then dictated their own fashion and music.
The original stylists gave up on the whole mod scene and everything before anyone else did. They were the first to turn hippy - cool eh? Not.
Me? I'm quite (no extremely) happy to follow the styles set for me by the coolest people on the planet ever - the original mods. Yeah, I'll follow and copy them, but also update some things I'm not happy with too. But at the end of the day, I *want* to copy them
I am a mod.
Not a frigging casual, skinhead, stylist, swirly or anything else.
Err.. got a bit carried away there didn't I?! I'm just sick to death mate of people trying to change and rename the things that I love.

Re: What Is Mod?
Hey Lee no clique, no snobbery just some deep thinking Mods trying to get a handle on where they fit into this jumble of different music, fashion and ideaology driven individuals.
Don't worry I am a Mod and I'm comfortable with it, just finding my place within it all, and using people like you to help me along the way.

Re: What Is Mod?
It's A Way Of Life.
All this is bollocks.
You can never define something that started a long time ago anyway. Mod has spanned across 50 odd years so obviously there are different breeds of Mod.
I for one wear what I want and listen to what I want and still class myself as mod. All these swirlies call themselves Mods are they ?? Yes one aspect of it.Not my aspect but thiers.
I have read through various posts of people getting modded up and going to a club.
What is Modded up. I just get dressed and go out and look like a Mod (I think)
A Punk now would no way associate themsleves with Punks from the 80's.
Ska music now is a load of kids on skateboards screaming down a microphone.
I am now rambling and not really sure if thois will make any sense to you.
I know what I mean th.ough
--- I plan to have it all while I'm still young...........

Re: What Is Mod?
I'm part of a clique and proud of the fact. It consists of me, myself and I, plus a few like-minded souls. Today a girl asked me what I thought of her new trainers and, biting my tongue, I said 'Well, it's not the kind of thing I'd buy so...I'm not the best person to ask'. Her response was 'You're just a snob!'. Well, shoot me. I've been labelled a snob many times for - what? - not having the same general taste as most people.
This is not the same thing as having a cliquey attitude, Lee, which consists of refusing to be friendly towards those who are not like-minded.
In response to a square world, the 'clique' developes it's own language, style, taste etc. This forum is probably full of a few cliques, by which I mean small groups who share interests which other members don't. I don't think that's a bad thing.

Re: What Is Mod?
So Mod is a look, a style, a politics, and a canon of music? So what would constitute the look, sharp Italian suits, Parka, Desert boots, Caterpillar boots, short hair styles, Levi's, The target, the British flag, the scooter. And what about music? The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Jam, certain songs? The politics, about being a face, one of the numbers, a ticket? I really feel we are getting somewhere guys.
