Re: Small Faces had it tough.
Went to see The Small Fakers at the cavern in Liverpool last month and they were brilliant. One thing Steve Marriot had was the most soulfull white voice i've ever heard and that alone sets him apart from all the big bands of the sixties.

Totally agree mate! The Small Fakers are a great tribute to the band for sure.In looks style and delivery.
On the subject of what sets Marriott apart though.I like you, always thought it was his voice that made him special, this small geezer with the voice as good as any black soul star just blows me away. But funnily enough when I ws recently chatting with Kenney Jones I made the same remark and he said "yes but he was also a brilliant guitarist and people forget that part of him"
It made me think that the early stuff didnt really show case that skill but later towards the end of SF and in Humble Pie days he truly should be up there with the greats as a genius guitarist.

Re: Small Faces had it tough.
Actually I think it was showcased quite well in the early days. It ain't a 20 minute guitar solo that makes you great any idiot with more than 3 fingers can do that. No, it's in the rhythm work, and even in the early days the SF were as funky as hell.

True its not just the solo work-but what I meant was it was not as obvious to those like me who cant play an instrument or would not have appreciated the skill involved.Later as Marriotts confidence grew it wasnt just about the cheeky chappy appeal, the catchy tunes or the clothes but his performance and skill on the guitar as well as vocally was undeniably up there with the greats in my humble (pie)opinion.
